Crazy story. a friend of mine knows these people.

From the Vancouver Sun

VANCOUVER - For one lucky five year-old, a seal that dares jump onto a dock and pull her underwater is more than bold.

He's just plain rude.

Minutes after a seal pulled Caleigh Cunning, 5, into the water at West Vancouver's Thunderbird Marina yesterday evening, the girl had a few questions for her father.

"She said, 'Daddy, why did the seal drag me in the water?'" said her father, Mike Cunning.

"I said, 'I think the seal wanted you to go for a swim.'

"She said, 'well, the seal wasn't very nice.'"

At about 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, Cunning, Caleigh and some friends were standing on the dock, cleaning the fish they had caught after a short trip off Thunderbird marina.

Cunning said he had turned from his daughter for a moment when he heard a splash.

"I looked over and couldn't see my daughter anywhere."

He said she popped up about two metres away, where she had been dragged by the seal into the water.

"I said 'Caleigh, swim to me, swim to me Caleigh!'"

Cunning said his friend, who had seen the incident, told him the seal had jumped four feet out of the water and Caleigh by the arm and pulled her into the water.

"It just happened so quickly. It was instantaneous."

ShamWow Guy In Slap, Chop Bust

"TV pitchman battered hooker in South Beach hotel room brawl"

MARCH 27--Meet Vince Shlomi. He's probably better known to you as the ShamWow Guy, the ubiquitous television pitchman who has been phenomenally successful peddling absorbent towels and food choppers. Shlomi, 44, was arrested last month on a felony battery charge following a violent confrontation with a prostitute in his South Beach hotel room. According to an arrest affidavit, Shlomi met Sasha Harris, 26, at a Miami Beach nightclub on February 7 and subsequently retired with her to his $750 room at the lavish Setai hotel. Shlomi told cops he paid Harris about $1000 in cash after she "propositioned him for straight sex." Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly "bit his tongue and would not let go." Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue. The affidavit, a copy of which you'll find here, notes that during the 4 AM fight Harris sustained facial fractures and lacerations all over her face (she is pictured here in mug shots snapped following busts in 2008 and 2005). After freeing his tongue, a bleeding Shlomi ran to the Setai lobby, where security summoned cops. Harris refused to cooperate with officers, who recovered $930 from her purse. "Both parties had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from their persons," police reported. In a brief telephone interview, Harris declined to answer TSG questions about her run-in with Shlomi, though she did say she is considering a lawsuit against the pitchman. Asked if she worked as a hooker, Harris declined comment. As seen in the below mug shot, Shlomi was also injured during the fracas and, court records show, was treated at Mount Sinai Medical Center. While Shlomi and Harris were both arrested for felony aggravated battery, prosecutors this month declined to file formal charges against the combatants. Police records list Shlomi's occupation as "Marketing," but make no mention of his affiliation with the ShamWow or the Slap Chop, both of which sell for $19.95 (plus shipping and handling). Don't make a moose mad

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Don't get a moose mad - that's what one family learned after trying to scare a moose away from their home near Prince George, B.C.

The family was using an air horn to scare the animal when the moose charged the home's front door.

The family took a video of the incident, which shows the moose tramping around in the snow outside the house before running at the door, which the owners slam shut at the last moment.

Conservation officers say the moose was probably upset by the family's barking dog and the air horn.

No one was hurt and conservation officers say anyone encountering a wandering moose should just leave the animal alone and give it plenty of space.

Krazy Kangaroo ambushes family home.

An Australian man has fought off a 6ft, 90lbs kangaroo after it burst through his bedroom window and rampaged around his house, terrifying his young children.

The confused marsupial smashed its way into Beat Ettlin's home in the Canberra suburb of Garran.

The 42-year-old told Sky News Online: "I just saw this black thing. I thought it was a lunatic ninja, an intruder. It just fell on top of us on the bed. A couple of seconds later I realised it was a kangaroo."

As the creature began bouncing on their bed, Mr Ettlin's wife Verity tried to protect their nine-year-old daughter Beatrix who was also sleeping in their bed.

Ettlin thought kangaroo was 'lunatic ninja'

Verity, 39, told Sky News Online: "I just pulled the covers over our heads and screamed. It jumped on my shoulder, bounced across the bed and onto the bedside table. Can you imagine how close it was to my head?"

But when the kangaroo jumped into their 10-year-old son Leighton's bedroom, Mr Ettlin decided to take action.

"That was enough for me," he said, "I thought I have to do something about it. There is no way I can let him jump in there and hurt my son.

I could hear it breathing really heavily but otherwise there was just silence. It was a freaky moment.

Beat Ettlin

"When I got in there, it was against the wall by the window, trying to get out I think, so I just jumped on top of it. I got him in a headlock and pressed him to the ground.

"I had to push with my full body weight and I got him as low as I could. It was quite aggressive and tried to escape of course. I could feel how powerful it was.

"I had to open the door with one hand, pressing the kangaroo to the wall with the other hand. Finally, the door opened and I could actually release it.

The kangaroo left a trail of blood

"The whole thing only took about two and a half minutes, it was really quick. I could hear it breathing really heavily but otherwise there was just silence. It was a freaky moment."

The kangaroo left a trail of blood through the house and claw gouges in the wooden frame of the bed.

Mr Ettlin believes it was attracted by light on the bedroom window and cut itself on broken glass when it smashed its way through.

Verity said her Swiss-born husband is a hero: "I don't know many Australian men who would do the same thing. We all know kangaroos are very dangerous. But Beat knew there was a real threat to his son, his male instinct was to protect his family."

Cdn who wanted 'please' gets pepper spray

VANCOUVER, B.C. - A British Columbian man has learned the hard way that you don't ask a U.S. border guard to be polite when he asks you to turn off your vehicle's engine.

Desiderio Fortunato, of Coquitlam, B.C., asked the guard to say please and instead received a face full of pepper spray.

"I just said please," Fortunato explained Thursday. "He said 'get out of the car or I spray you' and ... I thought he was just trying to scare me off or something and I was pepper sprayed from a foot or two away."

He said it was then that five or six border guards jumped on him, placed him in handcuffs and questioned him for three hours last Monday afternoon.

"I felt like I was attacked by a bunch of wolves. They jumped on me, they threw me to the ground and they kneeled on me."

But he said the worst part was the pepper spray burning his eyes, and every time he rubbed his eyes he made the problem even worse.

Fortunato, 54, was born in Portugal, but became a Canadian citizen almost 30 years ago.

During questioning from U.S. officials, he said, the first thing they wanted to know was where he was born.

He said the entire demeanour of the officials changed when he told them he was of Portuguese origin.

"Their shields dropped slightly down. It was like you know: OK he's a Westerner, OK he's not a Muslim, OK he's a Christian, he's one of us. That's what I read (from them)."

Fortunato noted that the motto of U.S. Customs and Border Protection is to "serve the American public with vigilance, integrity and professionalism."

"What is that, that's what they pledge. I'm just asking for a please, and I get pepper spray in the face, and of course their argument is you must comply with anything an officer says."

U.S. Customs spokesman Mike Milne said the officer made a lawful order that travellers must obey but the use of force is under review.

Fortunato said he spoke with the same guard later and the man seemed contrite.

He crosses the border two or three times a week to visit his second home in Blaine, Wash., and said he plans to go back.

But first he'll need to send U.S. Customs an RCMP criminal record check and proof that he lives where he said he did.

He has no criminal record and said he isn't worried about going back.

Fortunato, who travels the world competing in and teaching jazz dance, said he often deals with customs agents.

"I just become more cynical," he said.

No kissing, you're causing traffic.

That's the message of a new sign that went up outside a train station in northern England on Monday.

The sign shows a profile of a couple kissing, with a diagonal red line across their image.

The goal is to stop departing passengers from pulling up in their cars at a crowded drop-off point and pausing to kiss each other farewell.

Virgin Rail says it installed the sign while refurbishing the station after a local business networking group said the place had to become more efficient.

But profit margins may have been a factor, too.

Virgin Rail says that if passengers want to share an embrace before they part company, they should pay to park their cars nearby where they can kiss all they want.

Lovers caught in Malaysia's anti-Valentine drive

Sure glad i don't live in Malayasia. I can't believe that they look at two people of the opposite sex behind closed doors a crime. That's sad that couples get "Busted" on Valentine's day. Not saying that i'm an advocate of premarital sex, but i am a strong supporter of FREEDOM. Which is what they are totally taking away. I don't even really like valentine's day, just another money grubbing holiday.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Authorities in Malaysia arrested 26 unmarried Muslim couples in hotel rooms during Operation Valentine - aimed at curbing illegal premarital sex in the conservative country.

An official said the couples, most under 30 years old, were detained for sharing rooms early Sunday in the beachside town of Kuantan in eastern Pahang state.

Badaruddin Ahmad Bustami, enforcement assistant director with the state's Islamic department, said authorities carry out raids each year on Valentine's Day in the Muslim-majority country.

Sharia laws make it illegal for unmarried Muslims to meet behind closed doors. Badaruddin said doing so constitutes a crime known as "khalwat," or "close proximity," which carries a maximum fine of about C$350 and up to six months in prison.

The sharia laws apply only to Malaysia's Muslims, not to Christian and Hindu citizens who together make up about 40 per cent of the population.

Badaruddin said the couples were released but may be charged later with khalwat.

"We don't agree with Muslim couples celebrating Valentine's Day because it's not Malay culture," he said. "Every Valentine's Day, many couples come here and they commit big mistakes under Islam."

13 year old daddy.

13 year old fathered baby

Yikes, I remember being 13 and not even wanting to talk to girlz. Let alone wanting to have sex with them.

"
LONDON - A 13-year-old boy pictured in a British tabloid cradling an infant is reportedly one of the country's youngest fathers ever.

Baby-faced and only four feet tall, the boy, Alfie, barely looks 10 and was just 12 when he impregnated Chantelle, now 15, the Sun reported Friday.

Shown in a video posted Friday on the tabloid's website, the diminutive Alfie takes the newborn girl in his arms.

Asked what he would do to support the child financially, Alfie replies in a small, high-pitched voice: "What's financially?"

The girl was taking birth control pills but missed one, the newspaper reported. Friends and relatives left the family home near Eastbourne, about 110 kilometres southeast of London on Friday without speaking to reporters gathered outside. The teenagers could not immediately be contacted.

The Sun did not say whether any tests were conducted to prove the boy's paternity. The paper did not offer any immediate comment when asked whether it had paid the family for the story.

Two satellites collide in orbit

LINK

"
In an unprecedented space collision, a commercial Iridium communications satellite and a defunct Russian satellite ran into each other Tuesday above northern Siberia, creating a cloud of wreckage, officials said today.

The international space station does not appear to be threatened by the debris, they said, but it's not yet clear whether it poses a risk to any other military or civilian satellites.

"They collided at an altitude of 790 kilometers (491 miles) over northern Siberia Tuesday about noon Washington time," said Nicholas Johnson, NASA's chief scientist for orbital debris at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. "The U.S. space surveillance network detected a large number of debris from both objects."

Pole Dancing in the Olympics?

Before you read on, please keep in mind that curling is an Olympic sport.

Carolyne Braid, owner of Pole Dancing Winnipeg, is part of a global community that would like to see pole dancing -- the activity commonly associated with strip clubs and a wad of small bills -- included in a future Summer Olympic Games.

"What we really are trying to do is take it out of the clubs, trying to bring it more mainstream," Braid said yesterday. "We're trying to get people to recognize the fact that there truly is a lot of skill and athleticism required to do this.

"It really isn't that different than gymnastics from a training perspective, it's just that this happens to be vertical."

While pole dancing is making its way into the living rooms of suburbia thanks to operations like Braid's, it still has a long way to go when compared to Europe. There, the European Pole Dancing Championships is an event judged not from the round of applause from the spectators in the front row, but on the athletic ability of the participants.

Obviously, losing the sexual element is the biggest hurdle facing the activity in gaining Olympic status, but Braid feels not many can appreciate the skill needed when assuming the pole position. It is a gymnast discipline, one that takes a unique strength and agility.

And all the clothes stay on.

"Not everyone has the opportunity to try to pick up their own body weight on a pole, but what I've found is once people experience touching the pole, be at a home party or formal fitness classes, the first reaction that we always get is 'Wow. This really does take a lot of work,' " she said.

"Until we get more people experiencing it first-hand, making it more mainstream and more accepted, we're still going to have that issue.

"People say that it really isn't a sport and it shouldn't be in the Olympics, but there are so many other things where people look at them and wonder how they are sports."

What could she be referring to?

Diamond in someone else's rough...

PHOENIX - So you've just flushed your $70,000 diamond engagement ring down the toilet: who are you going to call.

Well, first the city, but if that doesn't work try a commercial plumber.

Just ask Allison Berry, whose expensive, seven-carat wedding ring slipped from her hand just as she was flushing the toilet in the restroom of the Black Bear Diner in Phoenix, on Jan. 14.

Restaurant shift manager Elena Castela says city workers opened a pipe outside the restaurant and tried to flush the ring into the open.

When that didn't work, the city called a local office of Mr. Rooter, a plumbing services franchise.

"This is going to be like dredging for a treasure chest in the ocean," Mike Roberts, general manager of Mr. Rooter, said at the time.

Roberts guided a tiny video camera into the pipe with an infrared light attached. He eventually spotted the ring less than two metres over from where it was flushed.

Then it took 90 minutes of jackhammering and pipe removal before Roberts and a technician could recover the ring, eight hours after it fell in the toilet.

"They always say diamonds are a girl's best friend. In this case, a plumber is a girl's best friend," Roberts said. "She was just so excited, she had tears in her eyes. She gave us a hug and said 'Thank you so much."'

The Mr. Rooter bill came to $5,200 and the city's bill was $1,000.

Berry, of Eureka, Calif., and her husband also tipped Roberts and the technician $400 each and gave $200 to a diner employee for staying late.

Mexico: Giant Cheescake

MEXICO CITY - Mexico has long been known for tacos and tequila - but cheesecake?

Chef Miguel Angel Quezada says 55 cooks spent 60 hours making the world's biggest cheesecake - a two-tonne calorie bomb topped with strawberries.

The monster cake used nearly a tonne of cream cheese, the same amount of yogurt, 350 kilograms of pastry, 250 kilograms of sugar and 150 kilograms of butter.

Carlos Martinez of Guinness World Records declared the cheesecake the world's largest on Sunday at an event sponsored by Kraft Foods, maker of Philadelphia cream cheese.

There wasn't much competition. Guinness had no previous record for cheesecakes.

Organizers gave out 20,000 slices around Mexico City.

Baby took down a big operation.

LOL. Too Funny.

A B.C. man probably wishes he had given his 11-month-old son a set of keys to play with instead of a phone, after the infant accidentally dialed 911 and brought police to his dad's marijuana grow-op.

Mounties say a 911 call came in from a White Rock, B.C., residence Friday morning, but whoever was on the other end of the line hung up.

Officers arrived at the residence, and after numerous knocks on the door went unanswered, they entered the home.

"The gentleman was quite surprised," said White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Canning.

She said the 29-year-old male, startled by the sudden sight of police, insisted he hadn't made the call.

When it was suggested a child might have dialled, the father objected and said his son was far too young.

That's when police spotted the baby boy, phone in hand.

"We saw him playing with the cordless phone and just pressing all the buttons, so evidently he had called 911," Canning said.

With that mystery solved, officers began inspecting the residence and soon discovered a 500-plant marijuana grow-op.

The father was arrested and will appear in court in early April on charges of production of a controlled substance and mischief.

The boy was removed from the home by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, though he was later released into his mother's custody.

The mother does not live in the residence and had no idea what was going on at the home, Canning said.

Amazing: Twins born of different skin color, twice in the same family.

(NECN) - A British mixed race couple have become parents to a set of black and white twin girls for a second time, defying the odds, British broadcaster Sky News reported.

Dean Durrant, who is black, and Alison Spooner, who is white, from Fleet in Hampshire first welcomed daughters Lauren, who takes after her mother, and Hayleigh, who takes after her father, in 2001.

The couple was surprised to find that their second set of twins were also born with different colored skin.

Miya has her father's black skin and Leah is white like her mother. Durrant told Sky that he was "blown away" at the news and that he was still in shock.

A doctor said the probability of having two sets of different colored twins was "one in millions."

911 caller in North Dakota calls police to report a drunken driver: Herself

BISMARCK, N.D. - Police get calls about drunken drivers all the time, but rarely do they come from the alleged offender.

A 17-year-old girl in Bismarck, North Dakota, called 911 on New Year's Eve to report herself driving under the influence. Police Lieutenant Randy Ziegler says he has never heard of such a thing happening before.

The girl told authorities her location shortly before midnight Wednesday and officers found her in a parked car near downtown.

She failed a sobriety test and was arrested for failing to have control of her vehicle while intoxicated.

The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, was not cited for drunken driving.

"Her keys were in her purse and she was parked," Ziegler said. "She did tell us that she had been driving around for hours."

The call probably was a plea for help, he said.

"She told us her life was spiralling out of control, and she had spent the majority of time drinking over the past two weeks," Ziegler said.

The girl was released to her parents.

Japanese 'tenant' leaves Mexico City airport

MEXICO CITY - Easy come, easy go.

A Japanese man who had been living in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport since Sept. 2 - for no apparent reason - left under equally mysterious circumstances. Authorities searched the terminal for Hiroshi Nohara on Monday but he was nowhere to be found, said an airport official who was not allowed to be quoted by name.

The daily Reforma newspaper ran photos of the scruffy man getting into a cab Sunday at the airport.

Nohara's three-month residency at the airport made him a local celebrity whose life drew comparisons to that of Viktor Navorski, a character portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2004 movie "The Terminal."

But there was one major distinction: Navorski was forced to stay at a New York City airport after war broke out in his Eastern European country and officials said they could neither allow him into the United States nor deport him.

Nohara had a tourist visa that allows him to stay in Mexico - anywhere in Mexico, not just the airport - until early March. He also possessed a ticket home.

The middle-aged foreign national, whose exact age was not known, speaks little Spanish and never did explain his motives for staying when asked by an interpreter hired by the television stations that documented his daily activities and tourists who asked for his autograph and posed with him for pictures.

Reforma reported he left Sunday with a woman who had visited him at least twice at the airport. But no one is sure who she is.

The Japanese Embassy was closed Monday and no one could be reached to ask if they had news of Nohara's whereabouts.
